Yerba Maté

Sipping Streams sells four different types of Matés. Organic Yerba Maté, Roasted Yerba Maté, Mo'Rockin Mats and finally Lavender Maté. All of which are very refreshing.

Frequently asked question about mate is..."What is Maté?"

Maté is...well, Maté. It's a plant named: Ilex paraguariensis which is a member of the Holly plant family. 

Maté is traditionally in South America is served out of a gourd, which are cured, with a bombilla. Gourds are cured by many different ways that one can find in search engines. The steeping temperature for Maté is a lot like Green Tea, which  is from 160 degrees F and 180 degrees F. "Maté contains xanthines, which are alkaloids in the same family as caffeine, theophylline, and theobromine, well-known stimulants also found in coffee and chocolate." (Latin Merchant)


In Argentina, the Gauchos, the cowboys who heard the cows, (Argentina is known for their beef exports) they would have maté on the droves. Maté has an interesting history throughout South American culture, including many legends on how it came to exist.

Maté is a nice "picker-upper" for those sluggish days when one needs a boost.

Alaska Blends: Boreal Solace

Made in Alaska Certified Boreal Solace is a wild Alaskan blend of fireweed flowers and leaves and Alaskan lingonberries. It has a unique floral and tangy flavor. Fireweed and lingonberries are a

 good souce of natural vitamin C and pro-vitamin A. Fireweed is also a medicine to the native people of the Upper Inlet Dena'ina in Alaska. In Russia, its leave were oftenh used as a tea subsititue and were even exported, known in Western Europe as Kapor tea. Today, Kapor tea is still occasionally consummed.

The fireweed is picked local by staff and hand processed back at the tea house. Making this unique tea totally Alaskan made. It is avaliable in limited quanities for a short time. Come by and try some today!

       Here at Sipping Streams we have 26 different types of teas and tisanes, but we do have a collection that is Alaskan Certified. Which means we have the "Made in Alaska" Polar Bear symbol. Our Midnight Sun Herbal Blend is one of those select that have that symbol.

Sipping Streams-- The Beginning

Sipping Streams started out as a gleam in the eye of owner Jenny Downer-Tse. That gleam started out relaxing, but it grew into something more.

Jenny made the switch to tea from her quad-venti-carmel-inverted-macchiato coffee, to save money. "'Tea was the cheapest thing on the menu, so I started to drink that instead.'"

It was more than the cheapest thing on the menu it was also a way of talking to her relatives about their experiences with tea. '"More I studied tea, the more my family started communicating about the Chinese culture and their own history."

Tea and tea history isn't the only thing offered at Sipping Streams. Located underneath Wok and Roll on College Rd in Fairbanks, Alaska; Sipping Streams offers classes on Kombucha, Tea and Chocolate pairing among offering unique tea accessories. This month we are offering Tea and Chocolate I and II the last two Tuesdays of the month.
